The FF-1 was Grumman’s first aircraft design for the US Navy. The prototype XFF-1 (serial number A8878) was built to a contract placed on 22 April 1931, first flying on 29 December of that year. A two-seat design, with an enclosed cockpit, fuselage of all-metal construction, and wings covered largely with fabric. The XFF-1 was powered initially by a 616 hp (459 kW) Wright R-1820-E Cyclone radial engine, it achieved 195 mph (314 km/h) during service trials, and when the original engine was exchanged for a 750 hp (560 kW) Wright R-1820-F Cyclone the XFF-1 reached a top speed of 201 mph (323 km/h), faster than any US Navy fighter in service at the time.
This collectable model G-5/FF-1 represents the first of a long line of Grumman naval aircraft, a biplane fighter that first flew in 1931. Painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by skilled craftsmen using a wealth of detail, this 1/24-scale model G-5/FF-1 makes a great gift for any veteran, aviation enthusiast or history buff.
The G-5/FF-1, known as FiFi, served frontline Navy units for only three years, but marked the entry of a long line of Grumman Aircraft to the service. Powered by a 700-horsepower Wright R-1820 Cyclone, the CG-5/FF-1 could reach speeds of 201 mph, faster than any other Navy fighter of the day. Armament consisted of two ,30-caliber machine guns and 100 pounds of bombs. After being withdrawn from line units, the FF-1s continued to fly until the late 1930s, with some being re-equipped with dual controls and used as trainers.
